Psychology and Agility

"Constraints breed excuses. Limit constraints to what is essential, keeping them clear, concise, and minimal. Encourage people to move freely within these boundaries. Confident in their distributed authority" - Andrew Hobday

In this week's episode I addressed two of my favorite topics: agility and psychology. You can view the episode here too.

One of the key concepts he discussed about bringing true agility to organizations lies in empowering people. This is the concept of distributed authority. Instead of relying on layer after layer of management to make decisions, why not let decisions be made by those closest to the action?

However, in order for this concept to work there are a few important factors:

  • Need clear goals and understanding of what needs to be accomplished
  • Establish guardrails and clear limits without too much constraint of course
  • Having accountability mechanism to measure against

Are you giving enough distributed authority to your team? Do you wish you were provided more authority by management? I'd love to learn more about your experience. Connect with me via LInkedIn
